Beginner's guide to a ski holiday

Let’s not overthink this. If soaking up the sun and relaxing is your idea of a perfect holiday, you might be pleasantly surprised to discover how a change in scenery can shift your perspective. Trust me, I’ve been there. I used to believe a holiday wasn’t really a holiday unless it involved sunshine and warmth. When I was 19, after finishing my first summer season as a nanny in Corsica, I had the chance to try something completely different—a winter season. At first, I was hesitant. I thought, “It’s just going to be cold.” But I decided to give it a go, and it turned out to be so much more than I expected. Experiencing snow for the first time and being surrounded by a stunning winter landscape completely transformed the way I viewed travel. It awakened a deeper curiosity in me—if something this amazing was out there, what else was waiting to be discovered? That one decision to step outside my comfort zone opened the door to a whole new world of adventure.

The Travel

Planning your travel carefully is essential, especially for a winter holiday. Catching a flight is just the beginning of the adventure. While the journey itself isn’t too long, keep in mind that you’ll need to travel up a mountain from the airport—after all, that’s where all the fun takes place! When planning your journey, it's important to account for transfer times, which can range from 1 to 3 hours depending on the altitude of your resort. Additionally, consider the changeover days and whether they align with your travel dates. This extra planning can help you save on costs, so it's definitely worth checking in advance.

What do you need to book?

as with most things booking things in advance is mostly the better option. You can get package ski holidays with everything you need included. To be honest trying to do everything by yourself to save cost is really here nor there. at least if you book everything underone package you know where everything is and it is likely that then hotel have used the same providers also so they know exactly what to expect and can help along the way.

What to expect from a ski holiday

Here’s what you can expect: it’s cold, it’s physical, it’s cosy, and it’s undeniably fun. A ski holiday is a completely different experience from your usual beach break, but that’s the beauty of it. You swap sandy shores for snow-covered mountains, sunglasses for ski goggles, and lounging for an exhilarating mix of activity and relaxation. Whether you’re an experienced skier or a first-timer, there’s something magical about waking up to crisp mountain air and breath taking views.

It’s Cold

Yes, it’s cold – but that’s part of the charm. Ski holidays are all about embracing the winter wonderland, layering up in cosy gear, and enjoying the refreshing chill as you glide down the slopes. Modern ski clothing is designed to keep you warm and dry, and after a few runs, you’ll forget all about the temperature. Plus, there's something truly satisfying about warming up with a steaming hot drink after being out in the snow.

It’s Physical

Skiing is definitely a workout, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. You’ll feel muscles you didn’t know existed, but the sense of accomplishment as you master a new technique or tackle a challenging slope is unbeatable. The best part? You’re working out while surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery on Earth. And don’t worry – there are plenty of opportunities to rest and recharge between runs.

It’s Cosy

After a day of activity, there’s no better feeling than retreating to the comfort of your chalet or hotel. Picture this: a roaring fire, a warm blanket, and a cup of hot chocolate (or maybe a glass of mulled wine). The après-ski culture is all about relaxation and indulgence, whether it’s sharing stories with friends over fondue or soaking in a hot tub under the stars.

It’s Fun

Fun is at the heart of every ski holiday. Whether you’re carving down the slopes, building a snowman, or simply enjoying a snowball fight with the kids, there’s an infectious sense of joy that comes with being in the mountains. Many resorts also offer additional activities like sledging, ice skating, or snowshoeing, so there’s always something new to try.

Still on the fence? Give it a go – you might just fall in love with the adventure, the landscapes, and the unique charm of a ski holiday. After all, stepping out of your comfort zone could lead to some of the most memorable experiences of your life. Ready to get started?
